The Norns — Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld — live beneath the roots of Yggdrasill, the great world tree. Every day they pour sacred water from the Well of Urðr over the roots and carve the destiny of each human being into the wood. Even the gods cannot influence their decisions — when seeking favor, one must address the Norns directly. They represent the past, the present, and what is yet to come.
